Title I: A Brief Overview
Title I is a component of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Title I provides funding to schools based on the percentage of low income students in a school. At this time, Title I funding is governed by the current version of the ESEA, which is commonly referred to as the No Child Left Behind Act. Through this legislation, District 21 receives funding for schools qualifying for Title I funds. In exchange for this money, Title I schools, along with the District, are held accountable to meeting a variety of requirements, many of which are captured by the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) provisions, that are tied to student performance on statewide assessments (Illinois Standards Achievement Tests-ISAT).
